Surrey Police Service argues blocking the well\u002Dadvanced transition from the RCMP would be pricey and disruptive
. Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth set deadlines for the City of Surrey, the Surrey Police Service and the RCMP to deliver reports this month so he could make a decision early in the new year.
“This report clearly articulates the benefits that Surrey Police Service will provide both to Surrey and to policing across B.C.,” said Chief Constable Norm Lipinski. “As the provincial government looks to modernize policing in this province, SPS’s governance, community policing model, and modern police culture are all in alignment with the recommendations made by the all-party special committee on reforming the Police Act.
In its 25-page report, the SPS says the transition to a municipal force should not be halted because it has been underway for four years and 375 people have been hired.Article content
