This year’s living wage in Sudbury is a 16% increase from last year’s $16.98/hour, which assumes a work week of 35 hours

The living wage in Sudbury is now $19.70/hour, which represents a 16 per cent jump from the $16.98/hour recorded last year.

A living wage is intended to represent the amount of money people need to make ends meet, and factors the costs of shelter, food, transportation and other necessities against a 35-hour work week. In the “North” region, which includes Greater Sudbury, a family of four spends approximately $12,373 on food per year, which is the greatest amount of any region in the province.

The Board of Health for Public Health Sudbury and Districts passed a motion in November 2019 to endorse the living wage principle and to pursue certification. They received a Living Wage Certification in January 2020. Ontario Living Wage Network representative Craig Pickthorne told Sudbury.com that although they’d like to see the province’s minimum wage of $15.50 increase to a living wage standard rather than an arbitrarily set number, employers can always opt for the increase.

Even prior to this year’s living wage increases, he said the province’s minimum wage hasn’t met the living wage standard anywhere in Ontario.
