Dr. Robert Strang. chief medical officer of health for Nova Scotia, says the fall rollout of additional COVID-19 vaccine will go a long way in keeping Nova Scotians safe. - Eric WynneFifteen Nova Scotians have died from COVID-19 over the past week but the province’s chief medical officer isn’t ringing the alarm bell.

There were 39 new hospital admissions in the most recent report and 48 Nova Scotians are in hospital being treated for COVID, including nine in intensive care. Strang said the deaths and hospitalizations point to the importance of the fall vaccine rollout that Nova Scotians can book appointments for as of today.

The fall dose of COVID-19 vaccine will be available for people 12 years and older, beginning with those who are most vulnerable. Starting today, Sept. 15, people aged 65 or older can book an appointment and appointments will be available starting Monday. Nova Scotia has accepted the recommendation of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization and will offer the Moderna bivalent COVID-19 vaccine to people aged 18 and older.

"The original vaccines still provide protection against severe disease. However, we know that this protection decreases over time. The bivalent COVID-19 vaccine provides protection against the original strain of COVID-19 and enhanced protection against Omicron variants." Strang told the standing legislative committee on health on Aug. 30 that Nova Scotia’s COVID death rate has risen over the past several months but the overall death rate in the province since the beginning of the pandemic remains lower than the national average.
