Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker featured a dark warning regarding the possibility of Emperor Palpatine returning to plague the galaxy (again).

Having been resurrected as confirmed by The Rise of Skywalker, Palpatine was defeated once more by his own granddaughter Rey and a redeemed Ben Solo. However, the novelization reveals a dark possibility regarding Palpatine's potential future in the Star Wars continuity.
"General Leia thought they'd destroyed the Emperor at the Battle of Endor," Poe said. "But he came back. More powerful than ever.""Maybe," Poe said... "Or some other evil will rise. Evil always rises." To a degree, Poe's concern about Palpatine make sense. After all, everyone in the galaxy believed the Emperor had been defeated for good, ushering in a new era of peace once the New Republic forced the Imperial Remnant to retreat into the Unknown Regions. However, Poe's understanding that "evil always rises" is quite true whether Palpatine returns or not. Light needs darkness and vice versa hence the need for balance in the Force.
There's also enough evidence in the established Star Wars lore where Sith Lords could escape death using a variety of cursed methods. Darth Momin tethered his spirit to his helmet, allowing him to possess any who wore it. Darth Vader himself tethered the spirit of the deceased Grand Inquisitor to an abandoned Jedi outpost, using him as a living trap to catch any who attempted to explore its contents. Darth Bane's spirit haunted to his own tomb on the Sith world of Moraband.
