LITTLE BRAS D’OR, N.S. — Mary Devoe just wants to find — and retain — a consistent group of staff to maintain steady business at her restaurant and pizza ...

Mary Devoe, owner of Jane's Restaurant and Pizzeria in Little Bras d'Or, says she is seeking employees to work as grill cooks and pizza cooks in her restaurant. Until they can get more staff, Jane's will operate just five days a week. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTLITTLE BRAS D’OR, N.S. — Mary Devoe just wants to find — and retain — a consistent group of staff to maintain steady business at her restaurant and pizza shop.

“I just got back open after two-and-a-half months because my husband was ill and had since passed away,” she said. “So yeah, things have been challenging.” The Facebook post does mention that “if you are willing to train, and we feel you are a good candidate, there are programs available to help us both achieve our goals.”

“It’s been more challenging for smaller restaurants,” Stewart said. “About 43 per cent of the industry is either breaking even or losing money right now. It’s tough when you have benefits just to hold on to people.” “I had one guy who was here and a really good cook,” she said. “But you didn’t know if he was coming to work or not. One time, he showed up in mid-summer, had some alcohol in him and at one point he just shut the oven off and walked out. And we had no idea where he went; we all thought he was just going out for a smoke … but then he left.”
