Stan Rogers Folk Festival 2024: 27 years of music and community | SaltWire #festival #music #nsIn 2020, the City of St. John’s helped the Celtics Centre Hockey Corporation buy the DF Barnes Arena by providing a guarantee for the financed amount of $2.5 million.

Ellsworth said council agreed to guarantee the mortgage for the Celtics for the arena because there was a concern that if they didn't move to get the arena, it would potentially end up belonging to a private interest and the availability of ice time for youth hockey would be more challenging. “We used reserves to take out a mortgage so that we're not being charged $16,000 a month on top of the current balance. I anticipate in the coming months the Celtics will have a scenario worked out where they once again can take over the mortgage or have a mortgage created where they can move forward.”
