‘I can’t imagine the frustration’: Osborne

At Confederation Building on Thursday, Feb. 9, Dr. Susan Mercer, clinical chief of older adult care at Eastern Health, and Health Minister Tom Osborne announced a review of the province’s long-term care and personal care homes. -Juanita Mercer/SaltWire NetworkST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A comprehensive review will be done of long-term care and personal care homes in the province, Health Minister Tom Osborne announced Thursday, Feb. 9 at the Confederation Building.

Also on the panel are Dr. Janice Keefe, chair of the department of family studies and gerontology at Mount Saint Vincent University and director of the Nova Scotia Centre on Aging; and Kelli O’Brien, president and CEO of the St. John’s Care Group and former vice-president at Western Health. “We have a lot of guiding materials. We have the new national long-term care standards that were just released, these types of reviews have been done in other jurisdictions. really looking forward to hearing from residents, from their families, and from the staff in long-term care and personal care homes. It's going to give us a lot of really good information to guide some recommendations,” she said.

“And these individuals, they don't have the time. And we have a province like Nova Scotia who’s had an act in place for almost two years now, and you have a government now who’s coming in and going to do a consultation, which is great, but I understand it's going to take up to another eight months or so to do that, and that's still time waiting on something that could have been reacted to a lot sooner, especially when we saw the wave of these baby boomers coming.
