The ban was intended to protect her identity, as a victim who was sexually assaulted by a family member. They had two children of their own together, forming a family unit of six. “We had built a life with Pascal,” Claire recalled. “We were talking about the future. Our relationship wasn’t perfect … but we were building our lives.”

“The first few times that I can remember, it didn’t seem right but I wasn’t able to process in my head how a dad could be doing that,” she said. “I was also thinking maybe it’s normal for stepdads to be doing that so I didn’t really think anything of it, but then seeing other families and noticing that it wasn’t the same kind of made me realize.”
