While medication is essential to treat schizophrenia, other supports are needed to help people live successfully with the illness, Attwood said. The aim of the new clinic is to reach more people in need of treatment and support and help them return to their lives.Article content In Ottawa, about 12,000 people are living with schizophrenia and about 300 more will develop it this year.Patrick was a high-tech executive, running his own business after working for Nortel for years, when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2007.Article content“I didn’t want people to know. “The clinic is going to help people like me. Most importantly, it will infuse hope and recovery,” he said. He said one of the aims of the clinic is to make sure patients get good care so they can sustain a home.
