Southern California Edison is facing scrutiny for its potential role in igniting two recent wildfires in Los Angeles, the Hurst Fire and the deadly Eaton Fire.
Southern California Edison (SCE) is facing scrutiny over its potential role in sparking two recent wildfires in Los Angeles . The utility company acknowledged in filings with state regulators that its equipment may be connected to the ignition of the Hurst Fire , which burned about 1.25 square miles (3.2 square km) around the Sylmar neighborhood. The Los Angeles Fire Department is currently investigating the cause of the Hurst Fire and believes SCE's equipment caused the blaze.
Regarding the more destructive Eaton Fire, which tragically killed at least 17 people, SCE is reviewing a video that allegedly shows electrical arcing from a tower near the fire's origin. The utility, however, stated that initial investigations found no evidence of arcing and acknowledged that some damage was discovered on related equipment. SCE emphasized that it is still unclear when this damage occurred and is comparing pre- and post-fire photographs to determine the timeline.Multiple lawsuits against SCE cite the video as proof that the utility's equipment ignited the Eaton Fire. However, SCE maintains that it's premature to reach a definitive conclusion. The utility stated in a news release that it hasn't found any clear indicators linking its equipment to the fire, such as broken conductors, fresh arc marks in the fire's origin area, or evidence of faults on the energized lines running through that zone. The Eaton Fire was fully contained last week, as was the Palisades Fire, which was the largest of the blazes and destroyed thousands of homes, killing at least 12 people
