South Island Mayors Fight Against Province's 911 Cost Download

Mayors from 10 South Vancouver Island municipalities protested against the provincial government's plan to shift 911 dispatch costs to them, arguing it's unfair and will increase property taxes. The mayors claim the province is downloading a provincial responsibility onto local municipalities and are calling for alternative funding models, such as a cellphone levy.

The mayors of 10 South Island municipalities spoke in front of the B.C. legislature on Jan. 30, 2025 against the province's plan to have them pay for 911 costs.

So far the provincial response has been that they’d warned the municipalities five years ago, so pay up. Playing out in the background of all this is an ongoing internal assessment of E-Comm the province called for afterUntil that review is done, the municipal leaders say the province should continue paying.
