One of social media's most alluring Oahu locations will soon be but a memory.
will soon be but a memory. Honolulu officials have decide to remove the iconic 3,922-step Haiku Stairs — also known as the “Stairway to Heaven” — that span Oahu's Ko'olau mountain range, saying that it is “dangerous” and “not worth the trouble” of maintaining.
In the 1950s, the U.S. Coast Guard replaced the wooden stairs with metal steps and ramps and, by the 1970s, was allowing public access to the site. That access was revoked, however, after the steps made an appearance on the TV show “Magnum P.I.” and hordes of tourists began arriving daily.Since 1987, the Haiku Stairs have been under restricted access due to vandalism and liability concerns.
The city’s decision to remove the steps has been years in the making. In 2019, the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, which owns the scenic staircase and surrounding land, released anthat made it clear it wanted no part of the liability and ongoing security costs that the attraction requires. “In late April 2016, a swing was illegally installed near the top end of Ha‘ikū Stairs at the ridgeline, which presented potential life endangering consequences,” details the report.
