BIG POND, N.S. — The chief of the Big Pond Volunteer Fire Department is asking his team of emergency first responders to stock up on medical supplies for the coming months.

Cpl. Gary McLaughlin of RCMP Cape Breton Traffic Services said officers issued more than 70 tickets in less than a week. “We went and met with some of the student leaders and we are going to be partnering with them to get the messaging out that it will not be tolerated. When you're seeing speeds in excess of 40 over the posted speed limit … we’ve really got to start switching to that winter driving, you know what I mean?”

“It's ridiculous that we can't get permission. I've been asking for them for two years and we got one down on Kings Road but that’s a CBRM road. The data tells us through our own public works that people are slowing down because there's a computer chip that attracts all kinds of data and we can show that people indirectly hit the brakes when they realize they're speeding. So it's slowing people down, it is doing its job.
