“It’s not the faculty’s fault, it is a systemic issue caused by the university’s administration. From the survey and people we’ve talked to, there is support for the teachers to go on strike to improve our learning conditions and their working conditions.”

Caitlin Wildman, UPEI student and a member of Students Support the UPEIFA, said many of the issues the faculty union is fighting for will help increase the quality of education for students, including hiring more full-time faculty and evening out the student-to-faculty ratio. - Cody McEachern/SaltWire NetworkCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.

Wildman said many students have complained about a lack of supports that used to be available before the pandemic for many courses. Up until this point, negotiations have felt more like a conversation, said Arfken, with the university making almost no movement on most of the proposals put forward by the union.

“UPEI remains committed to reaching a settlement with the UPEI Faculty Association through any avenue, including interest arbitration, to achieve a mutually beneficial agreement that is in the best interests of our students and university community and before any labour disruption occurs,” said the statement.

On salaries, Arfken said the proposal the university has is the first one offered by the UPEIFA, which was set to the rate of inflation. However, he said the intent was for the union to compromise on salaries if other proposals were accepted.
