Dr. Greg Naterer, UPEI’s vice-president, academic and research, and a professor in the faculty of sustainable design engineering, provided the following ...
with four bargaining units represented by three unions: the UPEI FA, CUPE 1870, and IBEW 1928. The negotiating teams have worked diligently over the past 10 months to avoid labour disruption.
While negotiating new collective agreements with faculty associations is part of the regular, cyclical life of universities, the process can be stressful for members of the campus community, especially our students. The university is doing everything it can to minimize the disruption to our students’ academic journey. We are very concerned about the impact a faculty strike would have on our students and want to avoid a strike if at all possible.
We are fortunate that the university revenue has grown 24 per cent in the last six contract years. This allowed UPEI to increase its budget for full- and part-time teaching by 30 per cent over the same period. Currently, the UPEIFA is seeking a 30 per cent salary increase over the next three years, which is well beyond other settlements.
These proposals are not affordable. Within our available resources, UPEI is unable to increase tenure-track faculty numbers by 50 per cent or raise salaries by 30 per cent over three years.Accountability and integrity is one of four core values of the university. The university has three primary sources of revenue: government grants; tuition fees; and ancillary sales and service revenues.
