The man suffered several cuts to his arms and head but was not seriously injured. He was not hospitalized.
An 83-year-old man sleeping in the mountains above Sierra Madre and Arcadia was attacked by a bear and suffered scratches to his face and an arm Tuesday night, a wildlife official said.
“Unfortunately, we have to err on the side of public safety,” Healy said. “We can’t take the risk of an animal without fear of people.” The man was sleeping off of Chantry Flat Road, heard the bear, woke up and saw it, Healy said. The bear was described as weighing about 200 pounds and brownish.The man walked down Chantry Flat Road to the 1200 block of Arno Drive to get help. The bear followed him.
