Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a police-involved shooting that took place near Thunder Bay this week. Police tape lies on the ground near the intersection of Highway 11/17 and Pebblestone Road on Friday. A Thunder Bay police officer and a 58-year-old man were involved in gunfire in the area on Thursday afternoon. The man was taken to hospital, and Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is probing the incident.
The SIU said the shooting happened in the area of Highway 11/17 and Pebblestone Road at about 2:15 p.m. Thursday. In a media release, the SIU said that preliminary information suggests police received 911 calls from drivers travelling in the area, reporting a man with a shotgun walking on the highway. Responding officers located the 58-year-old man, the SIU said. The agency said the man fired his gun, hitting the police cruiser.No officers were injured. An update on the man's condition was not available on Friday. The SIU has identified one subject and one witness officer.
