THUNDER BAY — Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has released some details about an incident this week in Thunder Bay which it is currently looking into.According to the SIU, officers were sent to the 200 block of Ambrose after police received information that a person of interest in an ongoing investigation was in the residence. At that point there was an interaction between him and the officers, in which an ARWEN was discharged, and the man was struck with a projectile.

An ARWEN is a form of less-lethal launcher that fires a variety of munitions from a rotary drum magazine, including direct impact batons, chemical irritants and smoke munitions. It has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the case. The incident Monday evening concluded with Thunder Bay Police arresting 24-year-old Aquille Kadeem Malcolm of Toronto on a first-degree murder charge related to the death of 41-year-old James Chapais at a Pearl Street residence in May.

Malcolm is also charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with incidents on Ambrose Street on Aug. 21 and on Pearl Street on May 9 of this year.
