Critics say the COVID\u002D19 test requirement — which could cost between $150 to $250 — could discourage many Canadians from quick visits across the border.
The Peace Arch crossing between Surrey and Blaine had the longest delay at 20 minutes. Abbotsford-Huntingdon had a 10-minute delay, while travellers at the Pacific Highway truck crossing have to wait about five minutes. The U.S. border opened to non-essential travel at 9 p.m. Sunday night, the first time in nearly 20 months.
Travellers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to cross, but they’re not required to take a COVID-19 test to enter the U.S. through a land crossing. However, Canadians still need a negative COVID-19 molecular test taken within 72 hours of the border crossing in order to return home. Day-trippers can get their tests done in Canada and use it to re-enter, as long as it was done within 72 hours.Article content
