The WeCan Shelter Society in Courtenay celebrated the completion of two more shipping container homes for the marginalized on Sunday.
The Maple Pools Campground saw a grand opening after the community built their 12th and 13th shipping container homes for those either homeless or in marginalized living arrangements.
“We’re very excited about these next two units because hopefully we can get two people in before Christmas, and this will make their Christmas,” said Tom Grant, vice-chair of the WeCan Shelter Society.by volunteers through the WeCan Shelter Society. Measuring six by two-and-a-half meters, they may be small, but they’re heat efficient with a kitchen, sink, toilet, and shower, along with electric and cable plugins.“I think it’s working very well. People here are happy.
two Friday nights and Saturdays, so two weekends, put it all together and then came back a couple weeks later, and it’s done.”Zoning and securing land are two challenges. Grant says he would love BC Housing to help. BC Housing today said it’s not sure if such discussions have happened, but it’s built 600 homes in the Comox Valley for the marginalized since 2017, with ongoing projects in Courtenay and Hornby Island to add 66 more.
“Once you’re inside one of these, you feel pretty good,” said Craig Morem, who moved into the first shipping container home at the campground years ago.Morem says they provide a marked quality-of-life improvement. He’s glad others in Courtenay will have a new shipping container home this Christmas. For more than two decades Kendall Hanson has been reporting on news north of the Malahat.
