No one was injured after a plane overshot its runway and crashed through a fence at the Courtenay Airpark on Monday morning.
president Raymond Henault says the student pilot was the only one onboard the plane, and that he was practicing “circuit” training at the time, which involves taking off and landing.
“We don’t know the circumstances other than he did try to stop before the end of the runway and it was wet so he ended up going through the fence into the airpark runway,” said Henault.“I compare it to me hitting the garage door when I get home,” she told CHEK News. “He went off the end of the runway close to the water. It’s a good thing he stopped when he did or else he would’ve gone into the water and it would’ve been a much more serious incident, as it is it was more of a fender bender.”Courtenay Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Welsh says there were no fire risks, and an initial inspection did not find any leaks or spills coming from the aircraft.
Welsh says there’s been upwards of 10 aircraft-related incidents over the past decade, and that at least four or five involved an aircraft entering the water near the runway. Henault says there was some damage to the plane, mostly around its propeller, and to the fencing at the end of the runway.Adam Chan is a Digital News Editor who joined CHEK News in 2023.
