Shelburne County hockey players Jessica MacKinnon and Cohen Stoddard are both headed to the 2023 Canada Winter Games in P.E.I. as part of Team Nova Scotia. Stoddard will be in net for the boys squad, while MacKinnon will play forward for the girls hockey team. The two were on the ice at the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena in Barrington on Dec. 27 for a Redline hockey development clinic.
"We had three tryouts one week, they cut it down and we had another tryout in Antigonish for a week then they picked the team after that,” says Stoddard. “We just got done our winter camp. That was pretty good,”“When I started in novice I was a player, but after about a year or two I switched to goalie,” he says.
MacKinnon, 16, has been playing hockey since she was five. “I just enjoy the game and enjoy competition,” she says. Both Stoddard and MacKinnon say they are excited to be going to the Canada Games on Team Nova Scotia. Jessica’s mom Amanda MacKinnon said she and her husband Korey are very thankful to their family, friends, coaches, and community for their support and help over the years of hockey with both of their girls."They couldn’t be doing what they are doing if it wasn’t for the help of others," she says.
“Nova Scotia has athletes in every event. Although Team NS does not have a wheelchair basketball team, five Nova Scotian wheelchair basketball players will be competing under the Newfoundland banner,” says MacNeil.
