Diane Longmuir told a coroner\u0027s inquest on Wednesday she was sure Sargent would have been admitted to hospital, not returned to jail.

“I’m thinking to myself, ‘I know it’s not Shannon. She’s in the hospital. It’s not her, thank God.'”“I get to work and I went to my nurse manager and I told her, ‘I sent Shannon out last night, so I know it’s not her, but I’d like to know who it was.’ And she said it was her.

Sargent, a 34-year-old Aboriginal woman from Belleville, had a history of intravenous drug use and had checked herself out of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute on July 15, eight days after surgery to replace an aortic valve. She is believed to have then spent several days living on the streets and using drugs before she was arrested by Ottawa police on July 18. After a court appearance on July 19, she was taken to The Ottawa Hospital to be checked out before being sent to the jail.

“I had to tell him that she had to go and, by the way, they will be admitting her. She’s way too sick to come back here.”
