The Pacific Assistance Dogs Society got a $10,680 donation Wednesday in honour of Const. Shaelyn Yang, who was killed in the line of duty at a Burnaby park in October 2022.
A committee dedicated to honouring the memory of a Burnaby Mountie killed in the line of duty in October 2022 has donated more than $10,000 to a Burnaby assistance dog organization.
Const. Shaelyn Yang, 31, was fatally stabbed during a call to Broadview Park near the Burnaby-Vancouver border on Oct. 18, 2022. The Const. Shaelyn Yang Legacy Committee, established in early 2023, is dedicated to honouring Yang and causes that were important to her. On Wednesday, the committee presented a $10,680 cheque to the Burnaby-based Pacific Assistance Dogs Society.After Yang's death, Kalanj also noted PADS dogs had been brought to the detachment "often," to interact with Mounties and staff coping with the tragedy. The idea of bringing the dogs to Burnaby RCMP headquarters came from a former Mountie who works at PADS, according to PADS marketing and media coordinator Meredith Areskoug.
The money donated to the non-profit in Yang's name was raised during a barbecue last summer, through sales of a "challenge coin" honouring Yang and with a donation from the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society.
