National Defence says some of its senior leaders didn’t generate a single document dealing with the high-profile case of a general acquitted of sexual assault, but that officer has raised doubts about the department’s claims.
National Defence told Fortin that the offices of Bourgon and Thomas did not have a single document. In Carignan’s case, the department provided Fortin with two sets of public relations records, known as media lines. Since his acquittal, Fortin has tried, without luck, to get the Canadian Forces leadership to reinstate him to a position commensurate with his rank.
Those figures come on the heels of growing concerns that government secrecy is increasing and that the access law allowing the public to request information from federal departments for a $5 fee is broken. In other cases, the department’s responses strain credibility. For instance, National Defence claimed not a single document or any information whatsoever was sent to then-Defence Minister Anita Anand throughout the four-month period covering the selection and announcement of the F-35 fighter jet in a $19-billion procurement deal.
