Rory Angelotta went missing during Tahoe's biggest snowstorm in decades.
Placer County Sheriff's OfficeRory Angelotta, 43, scanned his lift pass at the Comstock Lift on Saturday around 11:30 a.m., shortly after making a phone call near the Northstar Ski Resort. Angelotta, who is the general manager of ski shop Surefoot at Northstar, moved to Truckee from Colorado in October, but is described as an"avid and experienced" skier.
When Angelotta failed to show up to Christmas dinner with friends, they reported him missing to the Placer County Sheriff's Office. Deputies found his car was still in the Northstar parking lot. Angelotta may have gone skiing in an area with avalanche danger, although the sheriff's office believes he did take avalanche gear with him.
Because of historic snowfall in the region that weekend, searchers were unable to find tracks or evidence of Angelotta's whereabouts, and faced"extreme weather" conditions, including"high avalanche danger, strong winds, whiteout flurries, frigid temperatures, and heavy snow loads." The sheriff's office cited"significant challenges" in the search due to closed roads and continuing snowy weather.
On Tuesday, the Nevada Air National Guard sent a Blackhawk with infrared capabilities to Northstar and a number of search-and-rescue agencies combed the area. The searches so far have come up empty.
