Sean Fraser says he’s confident he can solve Canada’s serious immigration challenges cdnpoli SeanFraserMP bychelseanash

The MP for Central Nova sees the immigration file—his first ministerial role—as directly benefiting his home province of Nova Scotia and the East Coast in general. The Hill TimesHe describes his local riding—formerly a Conservative stronghold held by Peter MacKay—as “notoriously friendly,” but adds: “I don’t think we were always as welcoming as we are today.”

“I’ve seen immigration transform my hometown in the last number of years, before I was appointed minister of course. And I was a big advocate for immigration since I began [in politics] because it’s actually kick-started a revolution at home. For the first time since I was in junior high school, there’s more young people moving into Nova Scotia than leaving, and what an incredible thing to be associated with,” he said.

One of those files was the protection of boreal caribou. In February 2018, the government published a federal action plan, and when Fraser was appointed to the role in September of that year, he spearheaded its implementation. “Question Period is not meant just to be a formality where people get their Facebook clips, it’s meant to be a forum and some days it serves this purpose more effectively than others,” he added. After serving as parliamentary secretary on the environment file, Fraser was shuffled to finance in December 2019, just in time for the COVID-19 pandemic.

The capital of Afghanistan, Kabul, was captured by the Taliban on Aug. 15, 2021, creating a humanitarian crisis that Canada had direct ties to through its involvement in the war in that country.
