A high streamflow advisory for the Fraser River has been issued by the B.C. River Forecast Centre. This means that river levels are expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected.City officials are urging residents to use caution when around the Fraser River shoreline, in particular, Quayside, Port Royal, Braid Industrial Area, Sapperton Landing and other exposed and low-lying areas adjacent to the Fraser or Brunette rivers.
They say city staff will continue to monitor the situation by conducting regular dike patrols and liaising with provincial officials., including Mission, where crews will install a Tiger Dam flood barrier along low areas of the local dike to prevent possible flooding. While it is unclear exactly how high the water will get, some models were predicting a level of 7.3 metres at the Mission gauge by July 7. The last time the Fraser exceeded seven metres in Mission was in 1972, the third-largest flood on written record, after 1894 and 1948.
