Upon arrival at the Fairmont Royal York hotel, hard by the city’s Union Station, a greeter pointed the way toward the compulsory COVID-19 rapid-test area. It was a veritable gauntlet of helpers, all of them looking as though they could be lululemon models, giving a rumpled journalist definite self-doubt. Visitors were given a card, which was presented in another room to a nurse who administered the test and put a sticker for a seat number on it.
The show began with a performance from Red Sky, an Indigenous dance company. It was wholly fitting for an Olympic event, as every Opening Ceremony has at least one moment where dancers denote the origins of life or the land’s earliest inhabitants or some such. These dancers, shirtless and in tank tops, gave a rumpled journalist even greater feelings of self-doubt.
