Students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic school enjoyed a special 'Baby Jesus Lunch' on December 17th, 2024. The event brought together first responders, local business owners, and the school community to celebrate the holiday season.

Students filled the gym at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic school for their 'Baby Jesus Lunch' Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024. Grade 1 teacher Amanda Parent said, 'So, we organize this event every year. It's Baby Jesus Lunch. So, we celebrate baby Jesus's birthday.' First responders and local business owners united to spread joy and kindness as part of the annual tradition. Students dressed up in holiday attire to share a communal meal.

'Spending time together,' was another student's favourite part of the event. 'They're dressed up in their fanciest outfits. We all come dressed to the nines and everybody here just has a great time,' said Parent. Principal Sean Crookshank said the initiative is amazing because it brings the whole school community together. 'Many of these students are new to Canada. Many of these students have not celebrated a Christmas dinner. Many of these families might find it struggling to make ends meet. So, this is a way that we can celebrate it all together and bring the community together,' said Crookshank. The food was delivered by Ottawa police officers. 'It's such a privilege that we get to help out with an initiative like this. The least we could do is make the deliveries and bring food to these kids; they're all so happy. The energy, it's really fun to participate in, ' says Cst. Rich Zulys.Gregory Aboukheir, who has been involved with this initiative by recently selling that restaurant, but still wanted to participate this year, said, 'I believe this is the time of year where we have to give back, especially if you're capable and have the opportunity.' The new co-owner, Eddie Baroud, says it's something he'll continue. 'Recently bought the restaurant. I had learned about this online and I thought we have to continue this tradition,' says Baroud. 'For sure, look at the look on these kids' faces. The energy in here is amazing.
