YARMOUTH, N.S. — The Yarmouth arts community and others gathered in protest outside of the now permanently closed Western Branch of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Yarmouth to paint a picture for the provincial government that this closure is the wrong decision. issued a media release saying the western branch of the gallery would not be reopening. The announcement came as a surprise to the community and was met with disappointment.
Linda Coakley, who has many ties to the arts community, recalls the wonderment and sense of awe as students came through the building. In the media release announcing the closure, AGNS said it was not reopening the branch because the organization is looking to create “a more sustainable operational model.”
The media release also said community-based art programming is developed in partnership with community organizations and artists and is listed on the AGNS website when programming is available. Yarmouth MLA and Liberal party leader Zach Churchill spoke at the protest, calling the closure heartbreaking.
“We are the centre of the Acadian region,” he said. “This could have been a centrepiece for hosting Acadian and Mi’kmaq art, local art here, when we have people coming in from across the globe to be here. This is so shortsighted. It’s almost like they didn’t want this thing to be a success.” Michael Morris, who is co-president of the Yarmouth Craft Guild, said it had already been a huge blow when just the community room of the gallery was closed. Now to see the entire gallery closed is disheartening.
