Two Saskatchewan families are receiving compensation after speaking out about their treatment at a Mexican resort where they allege staff pressured them to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) to prevent negative reviews following illnesses. Jesslyn Schigol and her husband, along with their two sons, a teenager and a four-month-old, vacationed at the Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun resort over Christmas.
While there, they fell severely ill and claimed resort staff demanded they sign NDAs before receiving medical attention or leaving the property. Similarly, Allison Field and her husband, accompanied by their four-year-old son, also experienced severe illness at the resort and faced pressure to sign an NDA. Neither family signed the agreements. Both families reported receiving compensation from the Canadian travel companies that facilitated their bookings. Schigol's family, who booked through WestJet, received a $10,000 refund for their hotel stay and $1,500 in travel credit. Field's family, who booked with Sunwing Vacations, received a full refund for their resort stay. Schigol attributes the positive outcome to her meticulous documentation of the situation, including photos of the NDA, medical interactions, videos, and email correspondence. She advises travelers to document everything in similar situations as it strengthens their case when seeking assistance from travel agents or tour operators. The incidents have sparked widespread attention and led to Tripadvisor temporarily suspending new reviews for the Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun resort due to an influx of non-first-hand accounts. While Schigol expressed relief at the compensation, she emphasized that many individuals have reached out to her with similar stories, highlighting a broader issue of resorts pressuring guests into silence. She believes these individuals seek validation and support, knowing they're not alone in their experiences. The attention drawn to these incidents has paved the way for greater awareness and potential changes in the travel industry's handling of such situations
