Santander has been rumoured to be considering leaving the UK market for much of the year

Santander has indicated a strengthened resolve to remain in the UK market by announcing a significant new appointment to its leadership. Amidst yearlong rumours that Santander might exit the UK scene, the banking firm has reinforced its dedication to the British market.

The banking giant has confirmed Sir Tom Scholar's appointment as an Independent Non-Executive Director and Chair Designate. Starting immediately, Tom will join the Board and is set to take over from William Vereker as Chair on 1 August 2025, upon which William will retire from his position on the Board, reports Birmingham Live. Ana Botin, Santander Group Executive Chair, commented: "Tom's experience and insight from his time in Whitehall, the IMF, and the World Bank will be of huge value." She added: "And I am delighted to welcome him to Santander UK. He joins us at an exciting time for the UK business as we continue to drive forward our transformation programme and integrate Santander UK with the group's global platforms." Ana Botin extended gratitude on behalf of the Group Board, saying, "On behalf of the Group Board, I would also like to express my thanks for William's exceptional contributions throughout his tenure." She praised William's navigation of the bank during tough times, stating, "He helped to guide the bank through one of the most challenging periods faced by the financial sector in recent years and has ensured it is now well placed to build on the momentum generated over the last year." Expressing his enthusiasm, Sir Tom Scholar remarked: "I am delighted to be joining Santander UK, and look forward to supporting the Board and the Executive Committee as they lead the bank through the next stages of its transformation." Santander boasts a hefty "14 million active customers" across the UK, as stated on their website. Tom carved out an impressive career as a Senior Civil Servant, spending the bulk of his tenure at HM Treasury. He saw through many pivotal moments as Second Permanent Secretary during the Financial Crisis and then progressed to Permanent Secretary for a successful six-year stint until 2022. Before concluding his civil service, Tom lent his expertise to global financial institutions, dedicating six years between the IMF and World Bank from 2001 to 2007 and later taking on a pivotal role as Chief of Staff and Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister in 2007-2008. Competing with giants like NatWest, HSBC UK, Lloyds, Barclays, Halifax, and Nationwide, Santander caters to 7 million digital users through a robust network that includes 444 branches nationwide and extensive telephone, mobile and online banking services.
