NHL trade deadline: Why it makes sense for the SJ Sharks to keep defenseman Jake Middleton and goalie James Reimer
SAN JOSE – The Sharks, under general manager Doug Wilson, have been sellers at the NHL trade deadline whenever they’ve been out of the playoff picture in recent seasons, and that might not change this year if the team is unable to re-sign center Tomas Hertl before March 21.
Add the fact that winger Timo Meier will need an extension after the 2023-2024 season, and things have the potential to become pretty tight from a salary cap perspective around SAP Center for the next couple of years.Middleton, 26, is making $725,000 this season and, if he remains healthy and in the lineup, will be a restricted free agent in the offseason.
Middleton spent years developing in the Sharks’ system to get to this point and has played well alongside both Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson this season. He’s far from untouchable, but the Sharks would be wise to keep him if they’re only going to get a mid-round draft pick in return. “If you told me this was going to happen in September when training camp happened, I probably would have laughed at you. It’s cool to hear, but I’m happy that I can put on a Sharks jersey and get to play in the NHL.”
