World-renowned footballer Sam Kerr was found not guilty of racially aggravated harassment against a police officer. The case stemmed from an incident involving Kerr and her fiancee after a night out, where they were taken to a police station by a taxi driver.

Sam Kerr , a prominent figure in women's soccer , was acquitted on Tuesday of racially aggravated harassment against a police officer . Kerr, who plays for both the Australia n national team and Chelsea FC in England, admitted to calling Police Constable Stephen Lovell 'stupid and white' during a tense encounter at a police station following a night out. However, she maintained that her words did not constitute the charged offense.

Kerr displayed no visible reaction upon hearing the verdict, according to Britain's Press Association, but offered a thumbs-up to her lawyer, Grace Forbes, after the judge exited the courtroom. The incident stemmed from an alleged altercation involving Kerr and her fiancée, Kristie Mewis, a US soccer player contracted to West Ham United. They were reportedly transported to the police station by a taxi driver who claimed they refused to pay for cleanup costs after one of them vomited in the vehicle and that one of them smashed the rear window. Kerr stated that she felt 'trapped' during the taxi ride and feared for her safety, alleging that she became verbally abusive towards Lovell at the police station, using expletives while making the aforementioned remark. During cross-examination, Kerr denied that calling Lovell 'white' was intended as an insult. Identifying as a white Anglo-Indian, she explained, 'I believed it was him using his power and privilege over me because he was accusing me of being something I’m not … I was trying to express that due to the power and privilege they (the police) had, they would never have to understand what we had just gone through, and the fear we were having for our lives.'Judge Peter Lodder acknowledged Kerr's behavior likely contributed to the charge being brought against her after the jury delivered its verdict. He stated, 'I take the view her own behaviour contributed significantly to the bringing of this allegation. I don’t go behind the jury’s verdict but that has a significant bearing on the question of costs.' Kerr's trial garnered significant media attention in Australia, with each day's proceedings scrutinized by domestic news outlets. The case sparked debate regarding the validity of the allegation, Kerr's conduct during the police interview, and her future as captain of the Matildas, Australia's beloved women's national soccer team. Kerr holds the distinction of being both the captain and all-time leading scorer for the Matildas, having netted 69 goals since her debut in 2009. James Johnson, the head of Australia's Football Association, declined to comment on how Kerr's return to the national team would be handled last week. He stated, 'We understand that there will be some disappointment out there (from fans), but what we would ask is that we all wait out. What we need to do is give Sam the opportunity to go through the trial.'Kerr joined Chelsea in 2019 and has a remarkable goal-scoring record of 99 goals in 128 appearances for the London club. Chelsea is the reigning English champion and a strong contender for the Women's Champions League title. Kerr's playing time has been hampered by an ACL injury sustained during a pre-season training camp in Morocco in January 2024. However, she is expected to make a comeback in the coming weeks, in time to participate in two international friendlies against South Korea in April, serving as preparation for the 2026 AFC Asian Cup
