Saanich Police have reported a rise in courier fraud cases, with four incidents occurring over the past four months. Victims are often contacted by scammers posing as bank representatives who claim their account has been compromised. The scammers then direct victims to withdraw large sums of money, which are subsequently collected by a courier. One victim lost $12,000, while another had their bank card used for fraudulent purchases and the scammer attempted to open accounts in their name.
Saanich Police says it has received four reports of courier frauds over four months, including one where the victim lost $12,000.
Over a four-month period, Saanich Police says it received four reports of courier frauds. In two of the instance, the people did not hand over any cash or their cards. In all four instances, a courier physically attended the homes of the targets and in some cases the person used Uber to get there. Saanich Police says it is not believed that the drivers are complicit in the frauds.Scammers often “spoof” phone numbers either with a local area code, or to pose as official organizations like banks. This means they change their call display information to show as a different one than it actually is.
“There are no circumstances when a customer should lie to their bank about why they are withdrawing funds,” Saanich Police says.
