The team of Russell Chabaud and A.J. Ferries combined to shoot 17-under 277 over four days to win the 2023 Champions Cup Invitational on Sunday at Champions Golf Club. Finishing a shot back in the four-ball format were defending champions Keith Kerr and Michael Parker, who won a scorecard playoff for second over Kevin O’Brien and Matt Vogt, whose 40-foot birdie attempt on the final hole that would have forced a playoff for the championship lipped out.
“To win any tournament is incredible,” said Chabaud, 36, who is in the landscaping business and is a product of Klein High School and McNeese. “To win a tournament like this is huge. It’s a privilege to play in it and to win it is amazing.” The 55th edition of the tournament comprised 52 teams from among the best mid-amateurs in the U.S. Chabaud, a member of Conroe Country Club, and Ferries were playing together as a team for the first time, and had only played a round together just once or twice. Chabaud’s regular partner Scott McAlpine did not play because of a business commitment.
Chabaud and Ferries, 35, a Cy-Fair High School and University of Houston product, carded rounds of 64-67-68-68. Each recorded 13 birdies throughout the tournament on the Cypress Creek Course. “The level of the competition in this field is good, and to stand on top is cool,” said Ferries, who is in the oil and gas business.
