We chat with The PopesExorcist star russellcrowe about what drew him to the role, the real life history of Father Gabriele Amorth, and the talent of his young co-star:
The Pope's Exorcist follows Father Gabriele Amorth, the chief exorcist of the Vatican, who has gotten into some trouble with the church, some of whom are skeptical of demonic possession. Father Gabriele is sent to help a young boy who recently lost his father and has been possessed by a powerful demon. In the course of his investigation, Father Gabriele uncovers a massive conspiracy that the Vatican has tried to keep hidden for years.
Screen Rant spoke with Russell Crowe about his new film, The Pope's Exorcist. Crowe explained what about Father Gabriele drew him to the role, including his incredible life even before becoming the lead exorcist of the Vatican. He also praised his young co-star, Peter DeSouza-Feighoney. Can you talk to me about honoring the portrayal of Father Gabriele, while still making the character your own?
He comes out of his war years, he goes to law school, completes his law degree, starts to work as a journalist. And then goes back to the same priest in Rome, and says, "I still have this calling." And the guy says, "Well, now it's perfect. Now you've lived some life. You understand what people are going through. You've faced extreme situations yourself. You'll have some wisdom that will benefit people.
