“The prices started rising during COVID for construction, just as they are rising for everything else,” she said. “As a result, many homes are not going to be able to afford to build or rebuild without more money from the government.”Article content The province has recently introduced a lending program to make it easier for not-for-profit homes to secure financing. But more private homes have received funding for additional beds as part of the long-term care expansion — including some with the worst records during the pandemic. Some research has found that not-for-profit long-term care homes was associated with better outcomes for residents during the pandemic.

Still, most of the 160-bed home has to be redeveloped by 2025. The home has been approved by the Ministry of Long-Term Care to rebuild and expand by 38 beds, to meet growing demand in the community. “For our community, $5 million would be a heroic effort,” said Porteous. “To my knowledge, that has never been done.”

“At this point we aren’t prepared to move forward with the project because financially we wouldn’t be able to afford it,” she said.Article content
