The City of Victoria has approved $12.8 million in provincial funding for upgrades to Royal Athletic Park and Centennial Square.

The funding comes from the province’s Growing Communities Fund, equal to $1 billion, providing a one-time grant to all municipalities to support infrastructure projects.

“We are thrilled to receive this generous contribution from the B.C. government’s Growing Communities Fund,” said Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto in a press release. Council approved that $8.3 million would go towards upgrading Royal Athletic Park. The city says it’s looking to improve the washrooms, spectator seating, lighting, and accessibility, with construction beginning in late 2027.

“I know the value of having high-quality public amenities and parks. These upgrades to Royal Athletic Park and Centennial Square invite everyone to connect with their neighbours and friends and celebrate as a community,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Municipal Affairs in a press release. The remaining $4.5 million is being allocated for the city’s Centennial Square Revitalization Project, which the city says will go towards new green spaces, a splash pad, new trees and improved lighting.“From cheering on Victoria’s HarbourCats baseball team at the park to enjoying concerts and markets in the square, these upgrades will benefit residents and visitors for years to come,” said Victoria-Beacon Hill MLA Grace Lore in a press release.
