As Canada’s premiers gather for their summer meeting next week in British Columbia, labour shortages will be top of mind for employers across the country.
Labour shortages are being felt across Canada, be it in aviation, construction, hospitality, trucking, and health care. Repercussions are rippling throughout the economy in different ways, from service delivery to product availability, strained supply chains, and the cost of goods, to name a few. They need decisive support from the federal government to move forward, particularly in Ontario as the province is set to negotiate a new federal-Ontario immigration agreement this fall.
In 2022, Ontario’s allocation has been set to 9,750 – wholly insufficient given the available opportunities in Ontario for gainful employment. The actual need is much higher, as Ontario’s job vacancies hit a record 359,000 during the first quarter of this year. Further complicating matters is the national immigration backlog that grew throughout the pandemic to an estimated 2.4 million people as of June 2022. We recognize the federal government is taking measures to address the backlog but encourage them to look at further ways to speed up the process to help newcomers come to Canada, particularly given heightened labour market demand.Article content
