My father was an artful chef on a U.S. military base in Newfoundland for nearly 20 years. He was a magician on any stovetop and could work his wizardry on anything from cupcakes to caviar, seal flippers to moose sausages. Alas, the gene that governs the ability to prepare good food failed to descend to this offspring.

I did a crash course online in how to prepare Canada’s greatest standby — the Kraft Dinner experience. I was a whiz. In less than a couple of weeks I had the boiling the water part down pat and could jiggle a strainer better than Susur Lee. Studies have shown that next to fish, Kraft Dinner is the greatest brain food ever invented.
