Rex Murphy: The right to your own opinion is a keystone of a true democracy

For centuries we have revered the “rule of law” as the central idea of just governance. We have the rule of law not so much to protect us from malign outsiders, but to protect us from ourselves in those moments when passion overrules reason, when from within a society force is threatened to achieve political or other aims. We also maintain the rule of law to be the chain fence guarding each individual’s precious equality with all other citizens.

A protester raises a fist near a fire during a demonstration outside the White House over the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police, on May 31, 2020.It is a strange and at the very least a worrisome time, and citizens are getting very little from their leaders in understanding this moment, assessing its potential for division, and in too many cases attempting to avoid its challenge by tacit or explicit support for many of its radical claims or deeds.

Another marker of this new dispensation is the howling of the Twitter gangs; their egregious pack attacks when someone, somewhere, known or unknown, is found “guilty” of WrongThink, or WrongSpeak or — I think this is the best term — DifferentSpeak. Some call it “cancel culture.” We had an example here in Canada over the weekend, when the chairman of UBC’s board of governors, Michael Korenberg, “liked” some tweets — digest that please, he “liked” some tweets — and within hours resigned. And, as is now a formula in these moments, Mr. Korenberg put out one of those sad apologies that almost all individuals or businesses issue when they are “caught” wandering from current hard progressive orthodoxies.
