The production of the 2008 play has a lot to say about modern technology and making connections.
Christopher Salazar as Dwight and Elizabeth Bunch as Jean in Alley Theatre’s production of 'Dead Man’s Cell Phone'And so it goes with Sarah Ruhl’s “Dead Man’s Cell Phone,” now onstage at the Alley Theatre through May 8. The unassuming Jean is sitting at a well-appointed but nondescript urban cafe when a phone at the next table goes off. The ringtone is the first few notes of J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1. Then it goes off again. And again.
Of course, Jean answers the phone, and is promptly sucked into the dead guy’s — Gordon’s — life. Directed by Brandon Weinbrenner, “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” is not exactly a cautionary tale about minding your own business. It’s more about the ways telling people what you think they want to hear can blow up in your face, with a fair helping of metaphysics on the side. It’s also very funny, even if most of the laughter it elicits is of the extremely awkward/uncomfortable variety.
But that’s not at all what the Brooklyn-based Ruhl has in mind. Jean’s habit of fabricating stories that paint Gordon in a favorable light frequently leaves those close to him breathless: could this be the man they thought they knew? And sure enough, right before intermission Gordon strides back onstage, looking like he’s got something to say.
