NEW: Researchers are discovering microplastics deep in the lungs of living people for the first time ever. But how did it get there? What are the implications? crudelykevin breaks down the findings:

Laura Sadofsky, the study’s lead author and a senior lecturer in respiratory medicine at Hull York Medical School in Heslington, England, said the particles were detected in parts of the lungs previously thought inaccessible.“Lung airways are very narrow so no one thought they could possibly get there, but they clearly have.”

Microplastics can be found in abundance practically everywhere today — “from the the Arctic to the Antarctic, the deepest parts of the ocean, even natural areas far away,” said Ryan Prosser, an associate professor of environmental toxicology at the University of Guelph. Another major concern is whether our bodies are able to remove the invaders naturally, or if microplastics will build up in our organs like heavy metals do, Prosser said.
