There remains a small chance, Passan noted, that doctors will determine rehab for Glasnow's partially torn UCL will be a viable path, though an elbow procedure appears likeliest. Recovery from a Tommy John procedure, in which a surgeon replaces the injured ulnar collateral ligament with a tendon taken from somewhere else in the body, usually takes about a year. In some cases, though, athletes need as many as two years to return to their previous level of playing ability.
A two-year recovery timeline would see Glasnow sidelined until the 2023 season, his final before reaching free agency. The 27-year-old impressed in his 14 starts this season, striking out 123 batters with a 2.62 ERA across 88 innings of work.
