Reports have alleged that the Conservative MP, an outspoken critic of Beijing, was targeted by the Chinese government.
“I’m not here to judge the service on just one single aspect, but if we can improve the flow of information for sure it will be better for everyone,” he said.
Mark Flynn, the RCMP’s deputy commissioner, also spoke to MPs about the issue of Chinese “police stations” operating on Canadian soil. “Part of our plan behind that public visibility in uniforms and police cars, particularly in provinces where the RCMP is not seen in uniform, was to help build some of that trust and confidence with communities.”
He said a previous note from CSIS about the interference did result in what has been described as a “defensive briefing” to Chong. While he has said he appreciated it, Chong said that briefing only provided overall guidance on what to watch for and how to protect himself, without informing him of a specific threat.“Something disturbing came to light and the relevant authorities in our system took action as they deemed best,” he said.
Morrison said the broader memo he received in August was a “deep dive” about the issue of foreign interference and was not intended to “spur any action.”Article content
