Amid Pride celebrations and Canadian comedy tour dates, Van Ness talks rights, representation and really good hair.
Pride Parade set to take place on Aug. 6,
“It’s true of human nature that we don’t really advocate for things unless we think that they affect us,” Van Ness says. “And, unfortunately, I think a lot of cisgender and straight people don’t realize that the Queer rights that we’re fighting for and talking about at Pride, these affect straight people too.”
“We’ve been having these conversations for hundreds of years. Queer people have been singled out for hundreds of years. It’s been a rotating hodgepodge. There’s always a marginalized community that’s getting targeted,” Van Ness says. “The pendulum always swings. People are like, ‘It will be better in 40 years.’ But they’ve been saying that since I was a little kid. And for years and years before that.
