In a bid to bring more skilled tradespeople into the workforce, the province is letting more high-schoolers enter apprenticeship programs early.

The new measure lets students in Grade 11 transition to full-time programs. The students would then be able to finish their high school educations after getting their Certificates of Apprenticeship. “For far too long, parents and students have been told the only path to succeed in life is by going to university, which is simply not true,” said Labour Minister Monte McNaughton. “When you have a career in the skilled trades, you have a career for life.”

Officials say they will begin talks in the autumn with industry stakeholders about ways to bring more young people into the skilled trades.Ctrl+Enter
