Laurie St-Georges and her Quebec team made a strong start at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, setting a new record by stealing seven ends in a single game against Manitoba's Kaitlyn Lawes. The tournament faced an unexpected challenge with a greasy substance on the ice, leading to interruptions and teams changing their brush heads. Despite the obstacle, teams displayed resilience and adapted to the playing conditions.

Laurie St-Georges of Quebec stole a record-tying seven ends in a single game at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, leading her team to an 8-2 victory over Manitoba's Kaitlyn Lawes . This impressive feat marked a significant highlight in the tournament's first Pool B draw. St-Georges' team stole points in the first, third through seventh, and eighth ends, showcasing their dominant performance.

Lawes, the defending champion, acknowledged their skillful execution, stating, 'Just had to get rid of that dang hammer, I guess. Just millimetres on the wrong side every time.' The previous record of six stolen ends in a game was jointly held by New Brunswick (1987) and Manitoba (1985).The early ends of the draw were briefly interrupted due to a greasy substance on the ice, which affected the performance of the brooms. All four sheets at the Fort William Gardens were mopped by the third end, and teams were given permission to change their brush heads. Six out of eight teams opted to do so. Teams, including defending champion Rachel Homan and Saskatchewan's Nancy Martin, expressed their adaptability and resilience in the face of this unexpected challenge. Homan, who defeated hometown favourite Krista McCarville 10-7, remarked, 'We knew that was going to be a tough one. Some people cheering on our backswing for us to miss, but that's part of the game. They're excited. They want their team to win.' Skrlik, playing with a full team after vice Geri-Lynn Ramsay sat out their opener with the flu, scored two in the seventh end and stole a trio in the eighth in a 9-8 victory over B.C.'s Corryn Brown. Martin defeated Prince Edward Island's Jane DiCarlo 8-6, marking her Hearts debut as a skip. Other notable results from the day included Alberta's Selena Sturmay defeating Nunavut's Julia Weagle 11-4, and Manitoba's Kerri Einarson opening with a 6-4 win over Brooke Godsland of Newfoundland and Labrador. The 18-team field is divided into two pools with the top three in each advancing. The final four Page playoff teams emerge from that half-dozen. In addition to $100,000 in prize money, the winner of this year's event represents Canada at next month's women's world championship in Uijeongbu, South Korea. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb. 15, 2025.
